PROJECT_INSPIRE CHAT WITH NKWOCHA MARYANNE

No nation has been able to realize its full potential by neglecting its women population. Nkwocha Maryanne is a girl-child advocate who believes that if women and girls are allowed to be themselves, there is no limit to what they can become. In this interview with Project_Inspire, ChangeMaker Nkwocha Maryanne shares her involvement in girl-child empowerment and her hopes for a better Nigeria.

PROJECT_INSPIRE: Can we meet you?
MARYANNE: I am Nkwocha Maryanne, a social entrepreneur from Imo state.

PROJECT_INSPIRE: How would you summarize your childhood?
MARYANNE : It was a fun-filled, amazing and disciplined experience. When I remember most of my childhood memories, I smile. Looking back, I can only say Thank you, Jesus.

PROJECT_INSPIRE: You said you had an amazing childhood. Did that resonate also with academics?
MARYANNE : I loved the idea of school as a child. I wasnt that girl that cried on her way to school (Hahaha!). I had my primary (T and Y International School) and secondary (St Joseph Secondary School ) education in Lagos State and hold a degree in Philosophy from Imo State University.

PROJECT_INSPIRE: What are your thoughts concerning the state of affairs of our country?
MARYANNE : I love my country, Nigeria, and I know there is still hope for her. I am committed to giving my best for her development.

PROJECT_INSPIRE : How are you involved in the country's national development process?
MARYANNE : Like I stated earlier, I am committed to playing my part to ensuring that we make progress as a Nation which explains why I am involved in some projects both personal and non-personal that impact on the Nation positively. One of such projects is the FEMALE&MORE PROJECT for which I am the Enabler for Katsina State. FEMALE&MORE PROJECT is a self-esteem and leadership project designed to embolden young females to believe in self, imagine and pursue a future of greatness. It's powered by Youngstars Foundation with support from World Movement for Democracy. Its founder is Kingsley Bangwell. I must add that my experience with Female&More Project has been a great one. I remember that when I started at first in Katsina, my audience (young girls) were timid and unwilling to communicate. But as I freely communicated with themsharing amazing stories of great womenthey began to open up. Many of them today can freely talk in class without fear of being laughed at. This change is natural when a person feels confident about herself and her potential. I believe that a few years from now, the trained girls will be change makers even beyond their communities.

PROJECT_INSPIRE: Are there other projects you are involved in?
MARYANNE :Yes. I am also a trainer with MindTheGap working on the Google Digital Skills Training Program. At MindTheGap,we are fully committed to building a community of digital natives, bridging the digital knowledge gap to improve employability and job creation.

PROJECT_INSPIRE: What has been your motivation?
MARYANNE : My motivation is the zeal I saw in some youth years back in a fellowship. I said to myself, If they can be concerned about their community with little or no money, then I dont have an excuse not to be involved in making impact.

PROJECT_INSPIRE: What challenges have you encountered in the course of your work?
MARYANNE : The major challenge has been attitudinal responses.

PROJECT_INSPIRE: Some of our youth don't believe in giving back to the society. How do you feel about this?
MARYANNE :This is not good for any nation. However, I believe the reason it is so with us here is that some of our young people think that helping others is a waste of time since there is no financial return. But they fail to understand that in helping others you help yourself and everyone grows.

PROJECT_INSPIRE : What are your final words to our readers, especially young people?
MARYANNE : The future belongs to those who readily prepare for it and only the skilful will be useful. So arise and make haste, the future is now.

PROJECT_INSPIRE:Keep up the good work, Maryanne!
MARYANNE : Thank you.
